Description The OCHM not only had great exhibits and programs but is home to the Hurley research library which specializes in materials about Southeastern Massachusetts before 1850, with a special focus on Taunton’s early European settlers. Questions about an ancestor? Interested in who used to live in your house? Ever wondered who owned a certain store on Main Street in the 1880s? Want to see some old maps? We can help! The library is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for on-site research. To ensure the best experience, we ask you to schedule an appointment before visiting our research library. Description From its earliest incarnation making pewter ware in 1824 through its growth into silver-plated and then sterling silver goods, Reed & Barton helped develop and define manufacturing in the United States. Until its final closing in 2015, the Taunton factory produced metal wares that mirrored the country’s changing tastes, helped build its commerce, and supplied a wide range of customers with quality metal goods. This collection contains over 200 examples of Reed & Barton Britania and silverware, as well as manufacturing tools. OCHM also has Reed family portraits, manuscripts, diaries, copies of newspaper articles, correspondences, company records, and catalogs pertaining to Reed & Barton in Taunton, ranging from the years 1824-2017.
