Volunteer

The Old Colony History Museum has a great team of volunteers and is always looking to work with other local history enthusiasts. Donating your time, interest, and energy can help the Museum in diverse ways to advance the mission of our Museum.

Basic Requirements

  • A warm, professional demeanor and knowledge of Museum programs are important particularly in positions where interaction with the Museum guest will likely occur.
  • Volunteers are responsible for attending the orientation and training sessions.
  • Most volunteer positions require you to be available during regular Museum hours, however some positions may require weekend hours and evening hours for special events.
  • Volunteers are required to undergo a background check, including a CORI (Criminal Offender Record Information) request.

As a volunteer we ask you to:

  • Participate in a training program

  • Establish a regular schedule and commit to it

  • Serve as a “goodwill ambassador” for the Museum

  • Have fun and learn something new!

The Museum will provide:

  • A vibrant and engaging work environment

  • The chance to meet new people, develop new skills, and learn new things

  • Ten percent off at the OCHM gift shop, tickets to paid OCHM events, and real-world museum experience

Opportunities

Program & Event Volunteers are needed to assist with hands-on activities, act as an as-needed assistant for special functions, and on site filming assistance. Program & event volunteers who show particular aptitude may receive additional duties in program/event planning and coordinating.

Education Volunteers are needed to assist with school field trips – both on and off site. Education volunteers who have education background would be instrumental in developing new field trip content and prototyping new content.

Curatorial Volunteers are needed to assist the Curator of Collections behind the scenes on projects that include records management, conservation, cataloguing, inventorying, exhibit installation, creation of finding aids, research and digitization.

Outreach Volunteers are needed to assist the Development Officer and Education Manager with Member outreach projects which include welcome and thank you notes/calls, mailings, fundraising, and facilitating OCHM booths at community fairs/festivals.
